Built in the Early English Gothic style in 1879 to seat 300, it consisted of a spiral belfry, nave, north transept, south porch and chancel. Local planners and DAC architects believe the porch was added at a later date (or dramatically altered) owing to different brickwork and is not original to the building. The inside of the church is now substantially different and bears little resemblance to how it was built in 1879.

In the late 1970's the church considered closing due to danger from the then unstable spire, it was reopened on 9th September 1979.
In 1983, initial plans to substantially reorder the church were submitted. In 1985, the then car park and church hall site were sold to build a care home, the funds used to carry out the reordering, which included building church rooms above the west end, turning the layout to face south, removal of pews and font, repainting of the brick and woodwork inside and installation of a platform along the south wall.
