A beautiful, 12th century church just outside the village of Redmire, St Mary's has a number of historic features which are worthy of note. The doorway is Romanesque, there is a 13th century octagonal font, and the timber roof is 15th century. Set in its own churchyard amongst some fields, it is a fine example of a country church.

St Mary's is a 12th century church, built around 1150 with restorations carried out since, including extensive work done in 1894. The porch houses a Norman, Romanesque doorway with stone seating. A short length of Norman scroll frieze is visible in the nave. The octagonal font is 13th century, with later alterations. The timber roof is 15th century. Fragments of old glass depicting shields of the Nevilles of Middleham and Scropes of Bolton are visible in the 15th century Perpendicular east window. There is a royal coat of arms for George I from 1720, and a number of interesting memorials inside and in the churchyard, including for Hannah Hanson, who died aged 105 in 1812.
From the 13th century until the Dissolution, St Mary's was served by the canons of Coverham Abbey, like several of the churches in the area.
The church was listed Grade II* in 1967.
The church is built of sandstone rubble, with a flat roof not visible from ground level. The 20th century porch has a Welsh slate roof and the Vestry roof is Yorkshire slate.
Quoins on the nave. South porch contains Romanesque doorway with decorative stonework and a blank tympanum. South side of nave has three lancet windows and a blocked gallery window. The chancel has a blocked priest's door, a mass dial and two lancet windows. At the end end, there are two trefoiled lights. Attached to the east wall is the tombstone of Hannah Hanson. There are no windows on the north chancel or nave. The vestry is situated on the north side of the nave, with a small lancet window. West end has a bellcote on the gable.
Churchyard is extensive, with many memorials and trees, surrounded by a dry stone wall with iron gates.
